Is District 1 Worth Staying In?
Before my first trip to Ho Chi Minh City, I spent hours comparing District 1, District 3, and even District 7. Looking back, I probably overcomplicated the decision.
After spending several days in District 1, I understood why almost every travel guide recommends it.
Every morning, I could walk to a nearby coffee shop, grab a Vietnamese iced coffee, and be at Ben Thanh Market within minutes. In the evening, Nguyen Hue Walking Street became my favorite place to stroll before dinner. I barely needed a taxi unless I wanted to explore neighborhoods farther away.
For first-time visitors, staying here simply makes the trip easier.
Which Part of District 1 Should You Choose?
Not every part of District 1 feels the same. Each neighborhood has its own atmosphere.
Near Ben Thanh Market
This area is ideal if you're visiting Ho Chi Minh City for the first time.
You'll find markets, local restaurants, souvenir shops, and many attractions within walking distance. It's lively from morning until late evening, making it a great base if you like being close to everything.
Nguyen Hue Walking Street
If you enjoy city views and evening walks, this is my favorite part of District 1.
The boulevard is lined with cafes, shopping malls, and rooftop bars. After sunset, the whole area becomes lively without feeling too crowded.
Japanese Town
I almost skipped this neighborhood until a local recommended it.
It's much quieter than the main tourist streets, yet still full of excellent restaurants, cocktail bars, and boutique hotels. If you prefer peaceful evenings, this is a wonderful choice.
Riverside Area
The riverside offers a more relaxed atmosphere with several upscale hotels overlooking the Saigon River.
It's perfect if you're planning a slower trip and don't mind walking a little farther to reach the busiest streets.

Final Thoughts
After staying in District 1, I completely understood why it's the most popular area for visitors. Everything felt easy - from walking to famous attractions to finding great local food just around the corner. While there are excellent neighborhoods elsewhere in Ho Chi Minh City, District 1 offers the best balance of convenience, atmosphere, and hotel choices. If it's your first trip, I think it's the perfect place to start exploring the city.
