After a few days of walking around Hoi An Ancient Town, An Bang Beach can feel like a completely different holiday.
The pace slows down.
Instead of narrow streets and lanterns, you get sand, sea air, beach cafés and long stretches of coastline.
That contrast is exactly why I like An Bang.
You don't need a complicated itinerary here.
A good beach day can be as simple as arriving before lunch, swimming, having seafood, reading for a while and staying until sunset.
Why Go to An Bang Beach?
An Bang is one of the most popular beaches near Hoi An and is easy to combine with a stay in the Ancient Town.
The beach has a more relaxed atmosphere than a major city beach, while still having enough restaurants, cafés and services to make a full day comfortable.
It works particularly well for travelers who don't want their Vietnam trip to become a constant sequence of sightseeing stops.
Sometimes you need a day with nothing planned.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
For beach weather, the drier months are generally the safer choice.
Vietnam Airlines currently recommends roughly March to August for sunnier conditions and beach activities, while the wetter period can bring more rain and storms.
That doesn't mean you can't visit outside those months.
Hoi An weather isn't a simple on/off switch.
You can still get beautiful days during shoulder periods.
But if swimming and long beach afternoons are your main reason for going, check the short-term forecast rather than relying only on seasonal averages.
Go in the Morning or Afternoon?
Both work.
Morning is calmer.
The beach feels more spacious, temperatures are usually easier to handle and you can have lunch by the sea afterward.
Late afternoon is better if you want to combine swimming with sunset.
Personally, I'd choose the afternoon if I were staying in Hoi An for several days.
You can spend the morning exploring the Ancient Town, return to your hotel for a break, then head to An Bang around mid-afternoon.
How Do You Get There?
An Bang is only a few kilometers from Hoi An Ancient Town.
That makes it much easier than many beach day trips.
Depending on where you're staying, you can use:
- bicycle
- motorbike
- taxi
- ride-hailing service
- private car
The roads around Hoi An are relatively easy to explore at a relaxed pace, although traffic conditions and your confidence on a bicycle should always come first.
What Can You Do at An Bang?
Swimming is the obvious answer.
But you don't need to spend the entire day in the water.
A typical visit might include:

Spend some time in the sea when conditions are suitable.
Sunbathing
Find a comfortable spot and slow down.
Beach cafés
There are plenty of places to stop for drinks or lunch.
Seafood
Fresh seafood is one of the better reasons to make your beach day last into the afternoon.

The beach is long enough for a relaxed walk without needing a destination.
Sunset
Stay until the light starts changing.
That's often the nicest part of the day.
Is An Bang Better Than Hoi An Ancient Town?
That's not really a fair comparison.
They serve completely different purposes.
Ancient Town is about architecture, food, history and walking.
An Bang is about slowing down.
If you have only one day in Hoi An, I'd prioritize the Ancient Town.
If you have three or four days, adding a beach afternoon is an easy decision.
What Should You Bring?
Keep it simple.
Bring:
- sunscreen
- water
- sunglasses
- swimwear
- light clothing
- a small towel
Sand has a way of getting into everything.
What About Food?
One of the nicest things about An Bang is that you don't need to leave the beach area for lunch.
There are casual restaurants and beachside places serving Vietnamese food, seafood and international options.
Prices vary considerably.
If you're on a budget, walk around and compare menus instead of choosing the first beachfront restaurant you see.
Is It Good for Families?
Yes, provided sea conditions are suitable and children are supervised.
The beach environment is much more open than the Ancient Town, which can make it easier for families to spend several hours together.
But don't assume the sea is always calm.
Weather and waves change.
If conditions look rough, stay out of the water.
An Easy An Bang Afternoon
Here's how I'd do it:
2:30 PM – leave Hoi An
3:00 PM – arrive at An Bang
3:00–5:00 PM – swim and relax
5:00 PM – early dinner or drinks
Sunset – walk along the beach
Evening – return to Hoi An
No rushing.
No checklist.
That's the whole point.
Final Thoughts
An Bang Beach isn't the kind of place where you need to keep asking, “What should I do next?”
That's why it works so well with Hoi An.
After several days of walking through historic streets and looking at lanterns, a few hours sitting beside the sea can be exactly what your itinerary needs.
